THE BLUE JACKET 40

bj40.jpg

A Performance Cruiser
with Zero Compromise.

The Blue Jacket 40 was conceived around a challenge that defeats most yacht designers: build a boat that can win races and keep a family happy offshore - simultaneously. Naval architects Tim Jackett and Bob Johnson brought a combined legacy of 5,000 launched sailing yachts and more than 30 industry awards to a hull that answers both demands without sacrificing either.

The result is a performance racer/cruiser that sails with the authority of a fully-crewed race boat and the reliability, comfort, and build quality that a family expects on a blue-water passage.

Built Off Shore Ready.

The Blue Jacket 40 hull is built using a vacuum-bagged resin infusion process with 100% modified epoxy/vinylester resin, multi-axial E-glass reinforcements and precision-cut closed-cell PVC foam coring - producing a laminate that is lighter, stiffer and stronger than conventional hand-laid construction. At all structural penetrations, coring is replaced with solid E-glass. The result is a hull that meets or exceeds American Bureau of Shipping offshore scantlings.

Her hull form is carefully sculpted to avoid the race boat tendency to become unwieldy when heeled. Fuller topsides forward balance the broad, flat aft sections, allowing the 40 to heel evenly — maintaining control, tracking, and seakeeping when conditions deteriorate. At a D/L ratio of 172, she is light and fast without the compromises that come with pushing that number further.

ACCOMMODATIONS

A Sailor's Home.

The Blue Jacket 40 interior is finished to a standard rarely found in a performance cruiser. Solid hardwood cabinetry throughout, dovetail-joined drawers with soft-close glides, premium Ultraleather upholstery and sealed planked cork sole with contrasting stripes. The 40 is available in two- or three-cabin arrangements, each designed around how sailors actually live aboard.

Choose between a two-cabin arrangement or a three-cabin plan with aft cabin. Both include extensive hanging lockers, drawers, and shelved stowage throughout. Multiple hardwood species available.

SAIL PLAN

Race Boat Power.
Two-Person Ease.

Not long ago, a SA/D ratio of 20 upwind and 27.5 off the wind was reserved for a fully-crewed race boat. The Blue Jacket 40's refinement of the Solent rig — carbon spar, Harken MKIV Ocean furlers, and all sail controls led aft to cockpit winches — delivers that same performance to a couple sailing short-handed.

The self-tacking jib makes tacking effortless. The 155% masthead reacher on its furler deploys in seconds and transforms the 40 into a reaching machine. The fully-battened mainsail on Harken Switch Track carries power efficiently. All three sails are trimmed from the helm — no foredeck crew required.

DEEP FIN KEEL

The benchmark configuration. Maximum righting moment and upwind performance for sailors without draft restrictions. The keel of choice for offshore passages.

SHOAL DRAFT BULB

A fixed shallow-draft bulb keel for coastal cruising grounds where draft matters. Full stability and sail-carrying ability with added access to shallower anchorages.

KEEL CONFIGURATIONS

Two Keels.
One Standard.

The Blue Jacket 40 is offered with a choice of two keel configurations, each cast from 4% antimonial lead with integrated low-CG bulbs to concentrate ballast as deep as possible. Both are template-ground, faired, and epoxy-coated. Both are through-bolted to the hull with stainless steel keel bolts exceeding ABS offshore standards. Both deliver the same high-lift, low-drag laminar-flow foil sections that give the Blue Jacket its race-ready responsiveness.
